Foundation year will teach you to see the world as visual artists do. This first-year experience at the University of the Arts provides all art and design students with an education in visual perception, expression, and image and object-making that forms the foundation for their future work.

Are the Foundation classes in sequence?
Yes. The skills, ideas and projects you learn in one class provide the foundation for learning in the next class.

Who participates in Foundation?
Every freshman in the College of Art and Design participates in this program in order to become a more well-rounded artist.

How will Foundation prepare me to choose a major?
Foundation will in introduce you to a range of arts and will help you decide on a major. You'll examine your strengths and talents, finding new ways to apply them. You will gain exposure to each of the departments in the college through coursework, presentations and orientation programs.

What courses will I take?

  • Two-dimensional design
  • Three-dimensional design
  • Drawing
  • Time and Motion (explores animation, film and video)

Will I get to meet faculty from every program?
Yes, in a less formal way. You'll meet with faculty who are practicing painters, sculptors, photographers, designers, animators and filmmakers.

What if I intend to major in film?
You'll have the option to follow a specific film/video sequence where you'll be introduced to motion-studies, video production, sound principles and other Foundation courses.
