BFA in Painting/Drawing
What makes UArts Painting/Drawing program special?
You'll be  influenced by the full range of your visual, cultural and intellectual surroundings on UArts vibrant campus in Philadelphia.  Your paintings and drawings will acquire intellectual depth by your exposure to a very wide spectrum of university course offerings including opportunities for collaborative projects with aspiring writers, musicians, and artists in other studio disciplines.

What’s the studio experience like?
The studio experience is personalized and aims at developing your unique artistic identity.  As a painting/drawing major, you’ll explore familiar and unfamiliar paths, be enriched by the diversity of ideas around you, gain confidence in your potential and come to understand your place in the broad context of contemporary and historical art.

How will I be prepared to practice professionally?
As you study for your degree in painting and drawing, you’ll acquire a strong sense of personal authority. In-depth critiques, visiting-artists’ lectures and exhibitions, juried competitions, and museum and gallery field trips will focus your talent and prepare you to present your work professionally.

Are faculty practicing artists?
Yes.  They have been honored with accolades like the Guggenheim Memorial Fellowship for Painting, the American Academy of Rome Fellowship in Painting, the PEW Fellowship in the Arts and the National Endowment for the Arts.  Some have exhibited in the Whitney Museum of American Art in New York, David McKee and the Tibor de Nagy galleries in New York, the Institute of Contemporary Art in Philadelphia, the Philadelphia Museum of Art, the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, and the Tamayo Museum in Mexico City.

You might find yourself painting panoramic views of the city’s architecture as seen from our eighth floor studio windows.  You might discover new artistic themes inspired by visits to the city’s world-class cultural institutions, some of them right down the street on the Avenue of the Arts." - David Kettner, program coordinator
