The Ira Brind School of Theatre Arts, under the new leadership of Joanna Settle, Director, is a thriving undergraduate, professional training program offering BFA degrees in Acting, Musical Theatre, Directing, Playwriting and Production and Design and Technology to 300 students is seeking to appoint a Head of the Musical Theatre Program. The Ira Brind School is part of the College of Performing Arts in the University of the Arts and is situated on the Avenue of the Arts in Center City, Philadelphia, at the heart of a vibrant theatrical community.

The candidate should have strong leadership qualities and will be working with the newly appointed Brind School director, Joanna Settle, to further develop the program in relation to contemporary practices and the University's academic plan. A deep, thorough knowledge in the training of the singing actor (vocal technique specific to the Musical Theater repertoire, dance, movement, acting and musicianship) and their effective integration is essential, as is a sense of adventure and a deep curiosity about the medium of theater and it's potential. The successful candidate should also have a grasp of the range of technology available in the fields of teaching, performing and creating.

The position reports to the Director of the Ira Brind School of Theater Arts and has direct reports from full-time and adjunct faculty in the Musical Theater Program.


• Spokesperson and leader of the program, its faculty and students.
• Continuous assessment of the program, its faculty and students.
• Recruitment of faculty and students.
• Planning and development of courses and productions.
• Possible direction of productions.
• The development of avenues of employment for graduates.
• Teach, Train, and Advise Brind students.


The candidate should have an MFA or equivalent, professional teaching experience at undergraduate and/or graduate level and professional experience commensurate with the position.


3 year renewable at the Assistant or Associate Professor level to begin September 2014.
