Responsibilities: Teach and coordinate undergraduate jazz studies courses in the School of Music’s Bachelor’s degree programs. These subject areas can include theory, musicianship, music skills, improvisation, pedagogy, technology, music education, and/or ensemble. The successful candidate will also teach applied lessons to undergraduate and graduate vocal majors. Depending on the interests and expertise, additional teaching activities in related areas such as music education, accompanying, or an interdisciplinary interest, may be included. Responsibilities will include administrative duties, student advising and curricular development. Preference will be given to those with vocal teaching background.                             

Qualifications: Master’s Degree required; significant experience that reflects a record of excellence in creative and scholarly achievement, and proven success teaching at the college level is essential; knowledge in, and experience with contemporary and traditional music subjects appropriate to a Bachelor of Music degree program, demonstrated ability to work collegially with faculty, staff, and guest artists; a background of contribution to the academic and performance fabric of a contemporary music school in a collaborative all-arts university environment.

Salary: Commensurate with experience and rank.

The University of the Arts School of Music was founded in 1870 as the Philadelphia Musical Academy, and is located in the heart of center-city Philadelphia on the “Avenue of the Arts”.  The School of Music is accredited by the National Association of Schools of Music, the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools, and the Pennsylvania Department of Education. The music program is distinguished by its emphasis on Jazz and contemporary American music idioms. The School offers a BM in Jazz Studies with majors in performance (instrumental or voice), and composition; a BS in Music Business, Entrepreneurship, and Technology; an MM and a GD in Jazz Studies; an MAT in Music Education; an MM in Music Education; and undergraduate minors in MBET, Music Education, Musical Theater, and Songwriting. There are approximately 340 music majors, and 2,200 full-time students University-wide. The University of the Arts is a private institution offering 39 undergraduate and graduate degree programs through its College of Art, Media & Design, College of Performing Arts and Division of Liberal Arts. Schools within the colleges include: School of Art, School of Design, School of Film, School of Dance, Ira Brind School of Theater Arts, and the School of Music. The University of the Arts is the only University in the nation devoted exclusively to education and professional training in the performing, visual, and media arts.
