Up to 200 artists and non-artists from the University of the Arts gathered to paint, stencil and draw Vietnamese imagery of pagodas, lotuses, clouds and dragons on tiles that were used as part of a mural arts project at the Bo De Buddhist Temple and Community Center in South Philadelphia in April 2007.
A cooperative effort between the Pre-College Summer Institute and the Philadelphia Mural Arts Program with funding from the Philadelphia Foundation, the mural came to life on a three-story high by 300-foot long wall at 13th Street and Washington Avenue.
The mural project also included 10 students from inner-city Philadelphia who were working with individuals from the Bo De community to create hundreds more tiles adorned with stories and Vietnamese imagery and writing. Additionally, the 10 students created designs depicting their own stories.
